About Houston Urban Debate League

The Houston Urban Debate League (HUDL) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that develops and supports competitive debate programs in Houston-area public middle and high schools. HUDL operates through public–private partnerships (initially with Houston ISD and later with the Harris County Department of Education) and relies on volunteer coaches, mentors, and community supporters to run tournaments, training, and student programming. Over the last decade-plus HUDL has expanded into dozens of schools, awarded more than $100,000 in college scholarships, run free summer debate camp opportunities, and annually stages city championships and an awards luncheon. The organization has an active events and news program (city championships, awards luncheons, summer camps) and continues to send student teams to national Urban Debate League competitions in recent seasons.

Since forming an innovative partnership with Houston ISD in 2007 and later partnering with the Harris County Department of Education, HUDL has expanded debate programming into more than forty high schools and about a dozen middle schools across Greater Houston.
