About JIMENA: Jews Indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa (JIMENA)
JIMENA is a San Francisco–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded to educate, advocate for, and preserve the history, culture, and rights of Jews indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa. The organization operates programs in education, advocacy, research, Arabic-language outreach, oral history, campus and young-adult engagement, and capacity-building for Sephardic and Mizrahi communal leaders.
The organization’s EIN (26-2893844) and tax filings were confirmed through public nonprofit registries and JIMENA’s own disclosures. In the last 2–3 years JIMENA has produced major research and programmatic outputs — most notably commissioning and publishing the first national demographic study of Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews in the United States (2025) and issuing follow-on reports on Sephardic inclusion in Jewish day schools and summer camps (2025) — and continues ongoing education, speakers-bureau, and Arabic outreach initiatives.
Notable achievements
First-ever National Demographic Study (2025)
Commissioned by JIMENA and conducted at New York University, the 2025 study "Sephardic & Mizrahi Jews in the United States: Identities, Experiences, and Communities" is the first large-scale demographic and qualitative study of Sephardic and Mizrahi Jewish Americans; it produced national estimates, community portraits, and actionable recommendations for inclusion in Jewish institutions and research.
Sephardic Inclusion Reports for Schools and Camps (2025)
Following the national study, JIMENA released targeted reports assessing Sephardic and Mizrahi inclusion in Jewish day schools and summer camps (Los Angeles and New York), documenting progress and gaps and offering practical recommendations for educators and administrators.
Sephardic Leadership Institute & Leadership Development
JIMENA established the Sephardic Leadership Institute to train, network, and strengthen Sephardi and Mizrahi leaders and launched fellowship and multi-part leadership development programming to expand communal leadership capacity and representation.
