VOICE OF WITNESS -A NONPROFIT PUBLIC BENEFIT CORP
Voice of Witness advances human rights by amplifying the voices of people impacted by — and fighting against — injustice through oral history, education, and ethics-driven storytelling.
About VOICE OF WITNESS -A NONPROFIT PUBLIC BENEFIT CORP
Voice of Witness (VOW) is a San Francisco–based 501(c)(3) oral history nonprofit that documents and publishes first-person narratives from people directly affected by human-rights issues. The organization produces a book series of edited oral histories and operates a national education program that provides free lesson plans, curricula, and training to educators and community partners.
Founded by writers and oral-history practitioners (including Mimi Lok, Dave Eggers, and Lola Vollen), VOW partners with grassroots organizations, schools, cultural institutions, and funders to center historically marginalized storytellers in classrooms, media, and policy conversations. In recent years VOW has expanded fellowship and partnership work (including a Storyteller Initiative), distributed thousands of books into classrooms through its Sharing History program, and continued to produce place-based and thematic oral-history projects that aim to support narrative change and advocacy.
Notable achievements
Sharing History distribution
Through its Sharing History initiative VOW has placed thousands of Voice of Witness books into classrooms, community organizations, and libraries (nearly 9,000 copies distributed through recent placement efforts), increasing access to primary narratives for K–12 and postsecondary educators.
Launch of the Storyteller Initiative
VOW established the Storyteller Initiative, a fellowship program that provides financial support, mentorship, and institutional resources to BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and otherwise underrepresented community storytellers and oral-history practitioners.
Education resources and curriculum expansion
VOW expanded and published free teacher-facing lesson plans and curricula (including topical guides such as Palestine-focused and California-history lesson plans) and designed field-trip and intergenerational storytelling programs that brought students into direct oral-history practice.
