About ORAM - Organization for Refuge, Asylum & Migration

ORAM (Organization for Refuge, Asylum & Migration) is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, founded in 2008 to protect and advance the rights of people fleeing persecution because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression (SOGIE). The organization combines direct protection services in transit countries, legal and technical support, capacity building for local partners, research, and international advocacy.

In the past 2–3 years ORAM has been active in emergency and longer-term responses (notably supporting LGBTIQ refugees from Ukraine since 2022), operating programs in Kenya (including work in Kakuma Refugee Camp), Mexico, and Germany, and publishing annual reports and research. ORAM maintains a donor-facing web presence, regular fundraising campaigns (including a recent 'Keep ORAM Strong' drive), and publicly available financial filings and annual reports.

Notable achievements

Short-term housing and emergency support

ORAM expanded short-term housing and stabilization services for LGBTIQ refugees in transit countries, including multi-month apartment support in Germany for people fleeing the 2022 Russia-Ukraine war and partnerships to provide emergency shelter in Kenya and Mexico.

Economic empowerment in Kakuma (Kenya)

Through agricultural and livelihoods programming, ORAM supported the establishment of kitchen gardens and small-scale income activities for LGBTIQ refugees in Kenya; in one recent year the program reached dozens of participants (84 beneficiaries were reported in program communications).

Sustained fundraising to protect operations

ORAM’s recent donor campaign 'Keep ORAM Strong' rapidly raised community support (reported at over $90,000 in a single month) to sustain core protection and program activities while the organization scaled emergency responses.
