Awaiaulu is dedicated to developing resources and resource people that can bridge Hawaiian knowledge from the past to the present and the future. The organization produces accessible historical and language resources and trains translators and editors to perpetuate and advance the use of the Hawaiian language.

About AWAIAULU INC

Awaiaulu, Inc. is a Honolulu-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on Hawaiian-language preservation, scholarship, translation training, and the production of bilingual educational resources. The organization trains translators and editors, creates searchable primary-source collections and curricula (Kīpapa), and publishes bilingual works that make historical Hawaiian-language materials accessible to educators, researchers, and the public.

In recent years Awaiaulu has completed major publishing and outreach work (including a bilingual edition of Samuel M. Bilingual publication — Ke Kumu Aupuni (2022)

Awaiaulu published a bilingual (ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi and English) edition of Samuel M. Kamakau’s Ke Kumu Aupuni, providing a modern, searchable translation of 19th-century primary-source writings and strengthening access to foundational Hawaiian historical texts.

Federal Native Hawaiian Education award

Awaiaulu was awarded federal Native Hawaiian education funding (PR Award S362A210128, approximately $748,934) to develop Kīpapa online resource collections, educator curricula, and community ʻIke Hawaiʻi summits, with an explicit goal of expanding reliable Hawaiian historical resources and increasing access for learners and educators across the islands.

School distribution partnership (2023)

Through a community partnership with Hawaiian Airlines, Awaiaulu distributed hundreds of copies of Ke Kumu Aupuni to Hawaiian-language immersion schools statewide (272 copies to 34 campuses), increasing classroom access to primary-source materials.
