About Red Hook Art Project Inc

Red Hook Art Project (RHAP), founded in 2009 and based in Red Hook, Brooklyn, is a donor-facing 501(c)(3) arts-education nonprofit that offers free visual art, music, homework help, and social-emotional skill-building to children and youth (roughly ages 7–18). RHAP operates from a neighborhood storefront and organizes a volunteer community of artists, educators, and professionals who teach and mentor students weekly.

Beyond studio programming, RHAP acts as a trusted community hub: it expanded mutual-aid services during and after the COVID‑19 emergency, running food distribution, free stores, and community refrigerators while continuing to publish annual financial reports and Form 990s. In recent years the organization has sustained program growth, received public arts funding, and reported measurable community-impact outputs (see achievements).

National Endowment for the Arts Challenge America Grant

Awarded a Challenge America grant to support youth-led public art projects (listed among NEA grant recipients in the 2024/2025 NEA grants listings).

COVID-era Mutual Aid & In-kind Support

Led an expanded mutual-aid response that distributed over $350,000 in in-kind donations (food, PPE, diapers and other necessities) to Red Hook families and neighbors during the pandemic and recovery period.

2023 Community Impact — Meals & Free Stores

In 2023 RHAP reported distributing 5,171 meals, organizing 3 free stores, and operating 2 community refrigerators as part of ongoing neighborhood support and food-security work.
