About Self Help Africa Inc.

Self Help Africa Inc. is the United States‑based affiliate of the international Self Help Africa group, registered as a 501(c)(3) and headquartered in Long Island City, New York. The US organisation raises funds and partners with the wider Self Help Africa group to support programs across sub‑Saharan Africa focused on sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, enterprise development and water, sanitation and hygiene. Programs are community‑led and market‑oriented, working with smallholder farmers, producer groups and local partners to restore degraded land, improve productivity, increase incomes and strengthen resilience to climate shocks. The US affiliate is governed by an independent board and regularly publishes financial statements and an audited annual report describing program reach and financial activity. In recent years Self Help Africa has scaled climate‑resilience work (including large tree‑planting and land rehabilitation initiatives), supported index‑based crop insurance and other risk‑management tools, and on‑granted funds to country programs to maintain and expand project impact.

Notable achievements

Large‑scale tree planting and land restoration

In 2025 Self Help Africa supported farmer‑led environment and land rehabilitation activities that resulted in almost 2.5 million trees and seedlings being planted and tens of thousands of hectares of degraded farmland restored, engaging over 50,000 farming households across east and southern Africa.

Crop insurance for vulnerable households

Through its Resilience Initiative in Ethiopia, Self Help Africa supported more than 47,000 farming families to access index‑based crop insurance as a climate risk‑management measure (reported in 2024–2025), improving financial protection against weather shocks.

Wide reach in country programs (Kenya & Malawi)

In Kenya the organisation was part of a consortium that planted 1.4 million trees and supported some 31,500 farming families to adopt land restoration practices; in Malawi programmes rehabilitated over 1,100 acres and established community nurseries to supply seedlings.
