About JOHN BUNKER SANDS WETLAND CENTER
The John Bunker Sands Wetland Center is a nonprofit nature and education center located on the East Fork Water Reuse Project southeast of Dallas, Texas. It operates as the educational component of a public–private partnership with the North Texas Municipal Water District and The Rosewood Corporation, offering boardwalk tours, guided programs, field research opportunities, and TEKS-aligned school visits. The Center sits within a large constructed-wetland system that provides habitat for roughly 300 bird species while functioning as a natural water-filtration facility; the site is used for hands-on environmental education, research on water reuse and wildlife management, and community programs. Recent organizational activity includes a leadership change in late 2025 and continued wildlife monitoring and public programming through early 2026, including successful bald-eagle nesting events.
Notable achievements

Recipient of the 2022 Texas Leopold Conservation Award in recognition of exemplary voluntary conservation and habitat management on private working land.
Large-scale constructed wetland
Serves as the educational hub for the East Fork Water Reuse Project, a multi-cell constructed wetland system covering roughly 1,800–2,000 acres that naturally polishes water and can process tens of millions of gallons per day for reuse.
Demonstrated wildlife success
Long-term wildlife monitoring at the site has supported notable breeding success for raptors and other species (25 eaglets hatched since monitoring began), including multiple eaglets hatched in early 2026.
