About HURU INTERNATIONAL INC

Huru International Inc (EIN 27-0791036) is a New York–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that operates a production facility and program operations in East Africa. The EIN and organizational status were verified against public nonprofit registries and the organization’s own filings and website.

Huru’s model combines locally manufactured reusable menstrual kits with age-appropriate menstrual and reproductive health education, community engagement, and a vocational Skills Development Program in Nairobi. The organization reports multi-year impact through large-scale kit distributions, school- and community-based education, local employment in its Nairobi production site, and partnerships with international and local funders and NGOs.

Notable achievements

Large-scale pad production & distribution

Huru has produced and distributed millions of reusable sanitary pads and kits across East Africa, reaching hundreds of thousands of girls. The organization reports multi-year output in the low millions of pads and program reach measured in the hundreds of thousands of girls across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe, with reported large reductions in menstruation-related absenteeism among beneficiaries.

Local manufacturing and community employment

Huru manufactures Huru Pads and assembles Huru Kits at its Nairobi production facility (Mukuru), employing local men and women and providing steady work and skills training; the site has employed more than 100 people and has supported local economic opportunities while ensuring pads are made to Kenyan standards.

Skills Development & targeted partnerships

Huru runs a four-month Skills Development Program that has trained hundreds of young women in industrial sewing and small-business skills, and has scaled impact through partnerships (including multi-year collaborations that have reached tens of thousands of girls in partner programs). The organization has expanded programming via new partnerships and country-level initiatives to reach girls in schools and complex settings such as refugee camps.
