About FAMILIES EMPOWERED

Families Empowered is a Houston-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit (tax-exempt since 2011) that provides free, personalized school-choice navigation to families across Texas. The organization offers bilingual, one-on-one support, a searchable school finder, and outreach across multiple metro areas so parents can identify and apply to public, charter, magnet, private, and homeschooling options. Since its 2009 founding, Families Empowered reports having served large numbers of families—with a high share of families of color and many low-income households—and measures outcomes such as enrollment changes and parent satisfaction after support. In recent years the organization has scaled operations across Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Tarrant County and reported fiscal-year 2024 revenues of approximately $1.1M with expanded staffing to deliver its services.

Notable achievements

Large-scale service reach

Since 2009 the organization reports having provided K–12 school navigation services to more than 105,000 low-income families in Texas; internal follow-up surveys show roughly one in five families enrolled in a new school after assistance and very high reported satisfaction among those families.

Multi-city program expansion

Families Empowered has expanded its free, bilingual, one-on-one navigation model beyond Houston to serve families in Austin, San Antonio and Tarrant County, and operates a public school-finder tool to increase family access to options statewide.

Sustained operating scale (2024)

In its most recent Form 990 for fiscal year 2024 the organization reported approximately $1.10M in revenue and $1.61M in expenses, reflecting continued growth in donor and grant support and investment in staff and outreach to reach more families.
