About AT THE CROSSROADS

At The Crossroads (ATC) is a San Francisco–based 501(c)(3) that provides street-based outreach, no-judgment one-to-one counseling, and basic supplies to young people experiencing homelessness or housing instability. The organization brings services directly onto the streets (daytime and nighttime outreach), builds long-term trusting relationships, and connects clients to housing, health, education, and employment resources through partner referrals. Founded in 1997 by Echoing Green Fellows Rob Gitin and Taj Mustapha, ATC has served thousands of people over its history and centers a client-led, unconditional-support model that does not impose time limits or discharge clients for noncompliance. Recent annual reports and Form 990 filings show continued, sustained operations with regular street outreach (multiple nights per week), food and supply distributions, and one-on-one counseling, and the organization reports strong outcome rates for counseling clients in recent fiscal years. ATC has undergone leadership transitions in the past several years: Artavia B. Berry was named Executive Director in 2022 and led programmatic and fundraising initiatives; leadership later transitioned to internal/board leadership with Christina Luah appearing as Interim Executive Director in subsequent filings and staff listings while the organization continued frontline services and fundraising activity.

Notable achievements

Founded via Echoing Green fellowship

Established in 1997 when founders Rob Gitin and Taj Mustapha received Echoing Green fellowships, ATC pioneered nighttime street outreach for disconnected young people in San Francisco and built a long-running, relationship-first model of support.

25-year milestone & sustained reach

ATC celebrated multi-decade service to San Francisco street-involved youth (including a 25th anniversary edition annual report) and reports having worked with thousands of people since inception, maintaining regular nightly outreach and distribution of food, hygiene, clothing, and harm-reduction supplies.

Documented client outcomes

In recent fiscal-year reporting, ATC documents measurable client outcomes—high proportions of counseling clients achieve one or more individual life goals (housing, health, employment, or education improvements) and outreach programs made over a thousand direct contacts while distributing substantial in-kind supplies in recent years.
