About SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES PARTNERSHIP FOUNDATION

Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Foundation (SFP) is a U.S.-registered nonprofit based in Honolulu, HI that works globally to rebuild depleted fish stocks and reduce the environmental and social impacts of wild-capture fisheries and aquaculture. SFP partners with seafood buyers, producers, scientists, NGOs and governments to design and implement Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs) and Aquaculture Improvement Projects (AIPs), and to drive supply-chain transparency and improved management. SFP develops and maintains public data and decision-support tools (notably FishSource and the FIP Database) that translate fisheries science into actionable information for industry, governments and other stakeholders. The organization has been active in multiple regions and commodity sectors, and in recent years has focused on scaling industry engagement, improving FIP effectiveness, and integrating its tools with other sector initiatives to influence sourcing practices and policy outcomes.

Notable achievements

FishSource database expansion

Developed and maintained FishSource, a public fisheries data and assessment platform that covers thousands of fisheries worldwide and provides standardized scores and analysis used by industry, governments, and NGOs to assess stock status and management performance.

FIP-DB update and scale

Led the update and expansion of the Fishery Improvement Projects Database (FIP-DB), documenting and tracking the progress of several hundred FIPs and improving tools to evaluate FIP performance and timelines.

Support for Gulf of Mexico shrimp certification

Played a convening and advisory role in long-running improvement work in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery that culminated in third-party certification under an international fisheries standard in 2024, demonstrating multi-stakeholder progress from FIP activity to recognized management improvements.
