About Los Angeles Metropolitan Debate Commission (operating as Los Angeles Metropolitan Debate League — LAMDL)

Los Angeles Metropolitan Debate Commission (doing business as the Los Angeles Metropolitan Debate League, or LAMDL) is a Los Angeles–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that runs competitive policy debate programs for public high school students, prioritizing under-resourced and low-income schools. The organization operates league tournaments, a summer debate institute (hosted in partnership with universities such as USC), after-school coaching, and judge training to create sustainable debate programs across the city. LAMDL partners with LAUSD, Compton Unified and more than 30 high schools, as well as university and foundation supporters, to expand access to debate and college-preparatory supports. The organization points to peer-reviewed research linking urban debate participation to improved GPA, test scores, graduation rates, and college readiness and reports continued program expansion and resumed in-person programming following the pandemic era. LAMDL is led by an executive director and a program staff that manage school partnerships, tournaments, and training; the organization’s most recent annual filings show continued financial growth and multi-year support from local foundations, corporate sponsors, and individual donors.
