About PLANT IT FORWARD

Plant It Forward is a Houston-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that develops and operates a network of urban farms, trains refugee and other underrepresented farmers, and connects growers to markets through a Food Hub, farm shares (CSA), farm stands and wholesale partnerships. The organization uses regenerative and organic practices and builds workforce pathways through hands-on apprenticeships and business support.

In recent years PIF has shifted toward a cooperative farming model to increase stability and shared ownership among growers, expanded its Food Hub and market channels, and has been actively pursuing acreage to establish a permanent cooperative farm (announced in 2025). The organization remains an operating, donor-facing charity with public tax filings and ongoing farm programs and sales that support farmers and feed Houston households weekly.

Notable achievements

Citywide urban farm network

Built and sustained a multi-site urban farming network and farm-share program that supplies local markets, chefs, institutions and hundreds of households weekly while providing operating opportunities for refugee and immigrant farmers.

Workforce development & training

Established an apprenticeship and farmer-education pathway that provides hands-on training, mentorship and business support so graduates can operate independent or cooperative farm businesses.

Organizational growth and financial scale

Scaled operations in recent years—reporting substantial program revenue and expanded Food Hub activity—which has supported program expansion and a strategic effort to acquire permanent farmland for a cooperative farm.
