HAWAIʻI PEACE AND JUSTICE
Hawaiʻi Peace & Justice works to promote social justice, peace, and ea (life, sovereignty, rising, breath) in Hawaiʻi through grassroots organizing, nonviolent direct action, popular education workshops, and art activism as tools for social change.
About HAWAIʻI PEACE AND JUSTICE
Hawaiʻi Peace & Justice (HPJ) is a Honolulu-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that organizes for demilitarization, climate justice, Indigenous self-determination, and community-led alternatives to systems of violence. The organization combines grassroots community organizing, youth leadership development, popular education, and art-activism to advance those goals. In recent years HPJ has expanded youth programming through its Koa Futures Initiative and Nā ʻŌpio Aloha ʻĀina youth committee, played a visible role in island-wide campaigns such as the Red Hill/Water Protectors movement, and participated in regional solidarity and capacity-building work across the Pacific. HPJ is an operating, donor-facing charity with an active website, news/events pages, and recent Form 990 filings showing multi-year financial activity and organizational growth.
Notable achievements
Koa Futures / Youth Liberation Camps
Established the Koa Futures Initiative and a youth organizing committee (Nā ʻŌpio Aloha ʻĀina), and hosted annual Youth Liberation Camps (including 2023 and a second camp in March 2024) focused on Hawaiian history, climate justice, media literacy, and organizer training for young leaders across Oʻahu.
Leadership in Red Hill / Oʻahu Water Protectors
HPJ board members and staff were active initiators and organizers in the Oʻahu Water Protectors 'Shut Down Red Hill' campaign (2021–2022 and ongoing advocacy), supporting community actions calling for remediation and the closure of the Navy fuel storage facility that threatened local drinking water.
Capacity growth and grant recognition
HPJ joined a 2023 frontline/community-grantee cohort and has demonstrated measurable organizational growth: recent publicly filed financials show expanded revenue and net assets, enabling larger program and advocacy work across education, direct action, and community exchanges.
