About Society of Family Planning
The Society of Family Planning (SFP) is a U.S.-based, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) professional society that brings together clinicians, researchers, educators, and trainees to produce and disseminate high-quality science about abortion and contraception.
In recent years SFP has implemented a 2023–2028 strategic plan, published its 2024 annual report and data products (including the WeCount abortion-volume tracking report through December 2024), expanded targeted grantmaking and scholar development programs, and collaborated on updated clinical guidance published in 2025.
Notable achievements
Expansion of targeted grantmaking
In the last several years SFP transitioned its research fund toward targeted grant opportunities and scholar-development awards that provide salary support, mentorship, and training, increasing support for early-career investigators and equity-focused research pathways.
WeCount abortion data report
SFP produced and promoted national and state-level abortion-volume tracking (WeCount) with data through December 2024 to inform policy, research, and clinical planning, improving transparency about service volumes and trends.
Interdisciplinary clinical guidance (2025)
SFP collaborated on updated, evidence-based clinical recommendations in 2025 addressing contraceptive considerations for people with cancer, reflecting interdisciplinary partnerships to expand practical guidance for complex clinical scenarios.
