About FRIENDS OF HAWAIIS URBAN FOREST

Friends of Hawaiis Urban Forest (doing business as Smart Trees Pacific) is a Hawaiʻi-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on urban and community forestry across the Hawaiian Islands and the Pacific. The organization was founded in the late 1990s (originally as Friends of Hawaii’s Urban Forests) and later formalized as a 501(c)(3) operating under the Smart Trees Pacific trade name.

The group works with state and federal partners to deliver the Kaulunani Urban & Community Forestry Program, runs a Citizen Forester volunteer inventory program, and conducts urban tree canopy assessments and restoration planning. Smart Trees Pacific applies technical arboriculture, GIS and citizen science to increase and manage urban tree canopy, resilience to storms, and community stewardship.

In the last 2–3 years the organization has continued contract and grant work across Hawaiʻi and the Pacific (including awards for Guam work) and is a federal grant recipient for large urban and community forestry projects; it maintains a donor-facing website and accepts public contributions to support its programs.

Kaulunani Urban & Community Forestry Program

Serves as a partner/implementer for Hawaiʻi’s Kaulunani Urban & Community Forestry Program, delivering technical support, community engagement, and projects that strengthen island urban forests.

Urban Tree Canopy Assessments & Citizen Forester Program

Led urban tree canopy assessments for Honolulu-area planning and operates a Citizen Forester volunteer program to inventory and map public trees, improving data-driven tree management and planning.
