About MINNESOTA BREASTFEEDING COALITION

The Minnesota Breastfeeding Coalition (MBC) is a statewide coalition of lactation advocates, health departments, WIC programs, hospital lactation departments, La Leche League groups, local breastfeeding coalitions and community partners. Founded in 2006 and operating as a 501(c)(3) public charity since 2009, MBC supports and strengthens local coalitions, provides resources and training for professionals, and advances policies and environments that support breastfeeding across Minnesota.

MBC runs statewide initiatives including an annual conference, workshops, a hospital leadership summit, the Seed Money Project for local coalition capacity-building, and the Strong Black Babies equity-focused project. In recent years the coalition has continued to secure modest grant funding, file annual Form 990 returns, and partner with county public health and community organizations to expand breastfeeding-friendly spaces and outreach.

Notable achievements

Statewide Coalition Network

Grew and maintained a network of local breastfeeding coalitions across Minnesota (multiple dozen coalitions) that share resources, training and advocacy to increase breastfeeding initiation and duration.

Seed Money Microgrants

Established and runs the Seed Money Project to provide modest grants to local coalitions for coalition strengthening, workplace/childcare lactation support, and community outreach (program active and accepting applications for 2026).

Sustained Program Funding & Reporting

Maintained operational and program activity with recent annual filings (2024 Form 990-EZ) showing continued revenue and program spending and with grant-supported projects such as county-level Co-SHIP grants serving local coalitions.
