FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS IN GRAND RAPIDS

Festival of the Arts in Grand Rapids is a long-running, volunteer-powered, donor-facing 501(c)(3) arts organization that produces a free, three-day multimedia arts festival in downtown Grand Rapids each June. The event spotlights regional visual and performing artists, hands-on family activities, food booths operated by local nonprofits, and juried exhibitions designed to make arts accessible to broad audiences. The organization traces its roots to 1970 (inspired by Alexander Calder’s La Grande Vitesse) and continues to operate as a community-facing event, powered by hundreds of volunteers and supported by corporate sponsors, foundations and individual donors. Recent festival programming (2024) included an Artisan Village of more than 60 artisans, 200+ music, dance and spoken-word performances, a regional visual arts exhibition with over 300 juried artworks and a Youth Arts exhibit representing students from 27 schools. Festival of the Arts is an active, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) entity (ruling recorded in 2002) with an active web presence and ongoing fundraising and sponsorship efforts; its public-facing website currently includes messaging about both future event planning and concerns about long-term sustainability (including a site statement that the organization is considering or has announced a sunsetting plan while also promoting efforts to sustain future festivals).
