About West Michigan Construction Institute

West Michigan Construction Institute (WMCI) is a 501(c)(3) vocational training nonprofit based in Grand Rapids, Michigan that delivers hands-on construction trade education for high school students and adult learners. WMCI uses industry-aligned curriculum (NCCER) and employer partnerships to prepare participants for credentialed careers and direct placement with West Michigan construction employers. In the most recent program year (2024–2025) WMCI expanded course offerings (including new electrical and drywall tracks), completed new state-of-the-art training labs, and increased student credentialing and employer placement. The organization operates both high school CTE programs in partnership with local districts and a suite of adult craft and professional development courses designed to address regional skilled labor shortages.

Notable achievements

Expanded program offerings & training labs

In 2024–2025 WMCI added new electrical and drywall programs and completed construction of two new training labs to expand hands-on capacity and industry-relevant instruction.

Scholarship endowment established

EV Construction funded the Tony Roussey Building Futures Scholarship Endowment to reduce financial barriers and support student access to WMCI programs.

Rapid enrollment growth and credentialing

WMCI significantly increased student enrollment and issued numerous NCCER credentials in 2024–2025, with projections to serve substantially more students in the 2025–2026 year.
