About MINNESOTA STATE HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE

The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) is a voluntary, nonprofit association that governs interscholastic athletics and fine arts competition for Minnesota high schools. It provides rules, championships, and programming designed to advance the educational value of extracurricular activities for member schools. The League serves nearly 500 member schools and hundreds of thousands of Minnesota students each year, administering postseason tournaments, section and state-level competitions, and programs including adapted athletics, music, speech and debate, and one-act plays. MSHSL also operates ongoing training, eligibility and classification systems for schools and officials. In recent years the League has continued operational partnerships and program updates (for example, a 2025 partnership to adopt new bracketing systems for wrestling) while also being the focus of federal Title IX review and related litigation regarding its participation policy for transgender student-athletes; those legal and compliance matters were active in 2024–2026 and are part of the League’s current governance and public policy context.
