About SPECIAL CARE DENTISTRY ASSOCIATION NFP

The Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA) is a U.S.-based nonprofit membership organization of dental and allied health professionals focused on improving oral health for people with complex needs (including disabilities, medically complex conditions, and older adults). SCDA traces its roots to organizations founded in 1937 and was formed in its current federation structure in 1988. SCDA provides continuing education, professional credentialing pathways (fellowship and diplomate programs), examinations (including the ROA exam), an annual educational conference (SCDACon), a member bulletin/journal, and an online directory of clinicians. The association acts as a professional resource and convening body for hospital dentistry, geriatric dentistry, and dentistry for persons with disabilities, delivering regular conferences, webinars, and publications within the last 2–3 years.

Notable achievements

SCDA consistently delivers its multi-track annual conference bringing together clinicians, educators, and industry partners to share advances in hospital, geriatric, and disability dentistry; recent conferences were held in 2023 and 2024 with subsequent conferences planned for 2025–2026.

Foundation Nakao Worldwide Oral Health Recognition

SCDA was named one of five recipients of the Foundation Nakao recognition and received an award in support of its leadership and impact advancing oral health for people with special health care needs.

Sustained professional education and credentialing

SCDA administers ongoing educational programs, a long-running member bulletin/journal, fellowship and diplomate pathways, and the ROA examination to support advanced training and credentialing for clinicians who treat patients with complex dental needs.
