About YOUNG NEW YORKERS CHORUS
The Young New Yorkers’ Chorus (YNYC) is a New York–based youth choral organization founded in 2001 that develops singers through high-quality rehearsal and performance opportunities. It fields multiple ensembles (Mixed and Treble) under the artistic leadership of General & Artistic Director Alex Canovas and places a strong emphasis on commissioning and performing new works by emerging composers. YNYC is recognized for frequent world, regional, and city premieres, participation at professional conferences and festivals, and community-facing concert seasons; the organization marked its 25th anniversary season in 2025–2026 and has continued active concert programming and composer partnerships in the most recent seasons.
Notable achievements
The American Prize — Choral Performance (Community Division) Winner, 2023
YNYC was named the winner of The American Prize in Choral Performance (Community Division) in 2023, recognizing artistic excellence in community choral performance.
Ernst Bacon Award — Second Place, 2024
The chorus earned second place in The American Prize Ernst Bacon Memorial Award for the Performance of American Music (Community Division) in 2024, highlighting its work with American repertoire.
Championing New Compositions & Premieres
YNYC regularly commissions and premieres new works by young and emerging composers, including hosting the Daniel Thompson Memorial Competition for Young Composers and presenting multiple world, regional, and city premieres each season.
