About THE ANDREW LEVITT CENTER FOR SOCIAL EMERGENCY MEDICINE

The Andrew Levitt Center for Social Emergency Medicine is an independent, donor-facing 501(c)(3) research and advocacy institute based in Berkeley, California that advances Social Emergency Medicine — the study and practice of how social determinants intersect with emergency care. The center supports research, develops curricula, and funds emergency-department-based interventions that address homelessness, substance use, infectious disease prevention, and other social drivers of health. Over the last several years the Levitt Center has expanded its education and program portfolio (including the SEMinal Study online curriculum and a national Diversity Externship), published peer-reviewed research on ED-based population-health interventions, and partnered with hospitals, foundations and academic organizations to scale Social EM programs — claiming reach into hundreds of hospitals and measurable trainee outcomes such as high residency placement rates from its externship program.

Notable achievements

SEMinal Study online curriculum launch

Launched an online Social Emergency Medicine curriculum (SEMinal Study) in 2024 to expand clinician and learner access to SEM education and standardize training materials for emergency departments and residency programs.

Social EM Diversity Externship (sustained outcomes)

Operates a multi-year Diversity Externship program (running at least six years by 2024) designed to pipeline underrepresented learners into emergency medicine; the program reports strong placement outcomes for participating medical students.

Field‑building consensus and national uptake

Helped convene the 2017 consensus conference that crystallized Social Emergency Medicine as a field; work supported subsequent sections, committees and curricula in national emergency medicine organizations and contributed to adoption of SEM programs in hundreds of hospitals.
