MĀLAMA MAUNALUA
To conserve & restore a healthy & productive Maunalua Bay through community kuleana.
About MĀLAMA MAUNALUA
Mālama Maunalua is a community-based 501(c)(3) stewardship organization founded in 2005 that works to restore and conserve the biological and cultural resources of Maunalua Bay (East Oʻahu). The organization combines volunteer-driven nearshore and watershed restoration (the Huki invasive-algae removal program), community education and outreach, science and monitoring, and partnerships with government and research institutions. Mālama Maunalua runs regular volunteer 'huki' events to remove invasive algae, implements rain-garden and stormwater reduction projects in the watershed, and leads a community-scale coral restoration program that began outplanting coral fragments in January 2022. The organization is actively operating (ongoing public volunteer calendar and recent annual reporting) and engages residents, schools, businesses, and government partners in hands-on restoration and stewardship.
Notable achievements
Large‑scale invasive‑algae removal
Through its Huki program, Mālama Maunalua has organized thousands of volunteers and removed over 4 million pounds of invasive algae from the Paikō restoration zone, clearing 20+ acres of reef flat to restore native seagrass and algal communities.
Extensive volunteer engagement
The organization has mobilized a large volunteer base (tens of thousands of participants to date) for reef and watershed projects, combining community huki events, school outreach, and corporate volunteer days to sustain long‑term stewardship of Maunalua Bay.
Community coral restoration initiative
As a partner on the Restore with Resilience consortium, Mālama Maunalua launched community‑scale coral restoration, began outplanting locally sourced, thermally resilient coral fragments (first outplants in January 2022), and set a project goal to outplant 4,000 thermal‑resilient coral colonies to rebuild reef structure and resilience.
