About COLORADO SUN
The Colorado Sun is a statewide, reader-supported nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative, watchdog, explanatory and long-form journalism for Coloradans. Founded by journalists in 2018 and headquartered in Denver, the organization publishes free, nonpartisan reporting across topics including politics, water, environment, health, education and local business. In November 2023 The Colorado Sun converted from a public benefit corporation to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to strengthen its public-service mission. Since then it has expanded statewide reporting capacity, received significant philanthropic support to grow regional coverage, and won multiple state journalism awards for public-service reporting and series work.

On November 15, 2023 The Colorado Sun completed its conversion from a public benefit corporation to a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization to emphasize its public-service mission and enable philanthropy-supported growth.
Major growth grant from American Journalism Project
Awarded a multi-year growth grant (announced in 2024) from the American Journalism Project to expand business operations and create regional reporting hubs, enabling broader statewide coverage and audience development.
State journalism awards and recognition
Earned numerous journalism prizes for reporting and projects, including top public service recognition and multiple first-place awards in the Colorado Press Association contest for work produced in recent years.
