About FAIR HOUSING CENTER OF WEST MICHIGAN

The Fair Housing Center of West Michigan (FHCWM) is a nonprofit fair housing organization founded in 1980 and based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Center serves as a regional resource for fair housing services across a multi-county area in western Michigan, providing investigations, testing, complaint assistance, training, and community education. FHCWM combines enforcement work (including fair housing testing and investigations) with education and community investment efforts to address systemic barriers to housing access. In recent years the organization has run targeted neighborhood investment projects and received federal funding to expand investigations and testing capacity.

Notable achievements

Neighborhood Initiative investment

In May 2024 FHCWM announced a Neighborhood Initiative that invested $1.208 million (local allocation from the Fannie Mae settlement) into projects in Grand Rapids and Muskegon focused on down-payment assistance, owner-occupied home repairs, tiny-home and affordable housing development, and neighborhood stabilization.

Role in Fannie Mae settlement

FHCWM was a plaintiff partner in a national action addressing differential treatment of Real Estate Owned (REO) properties; the nationwide settlement (with NFHA and local fair housing groups) produced funds that FHCWM directed to community programs and equitable housing repairs and homeownership supports.

HUD Fair Housing Initiatives Program funding (2024)

FHCWM secured a multi-year Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP) award beginning in 2024 to expand investigation and testing work in West Michigan, providing sustained funding for complaint processing, systemic investigations, and tester recruitment/training.
