About LITERACY CENTER OF WEST MICHIGAN

Founded in 1986 and based in Grand Rapids, the Literacy Center of West Michigan is a community-based 501(c)(3) dedicated to adult literacy and English language learning. The organization offers free, leveled instruction and workforce-aligned programs — including workplace English, vocational ESL, family literacy, health literacy, citizenship preparation, and literacy coaching — designed to meet adult learners where they live and work. In recent years the Literacy Center has expanded employer partnerships and grant-supported programming to connect English and literacy instruction directly to career pathways (notably in healthcare and manufacturing). The organization reports multi-year audited operations, serves more than a thousand learners annually, and publishes regular impact reports and audited financial statements to guide donor and community engagement.

Notable achievements

Scale of learners served

Delivered literacy and English instruction to more than 1,300 adult learners in the 2024–2025 program year, expanding access across workplace and community settings.

Federal grant support for citizenship instruction

Secured competitive federal funding for citizenship and integration programming in 2024, enabling expanded citizenship preparation and related legal support; the organization later pursued community partnerships and donor support when that program concluded in early 2025.

Sustained audited operations and program focus

Sustained multi-million-dollar annual operations with program spending constituting the large majority of expenses (roughly four-fifths of program-year budgets) and regular independent audits and impact reporting.
