About WELL HOUSE

Well House is a Grand Rapids, Michigan–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 38-2779457) that develops and operates permanent, shared, low-cost housing for people and families experiencing homelessness or severe housing insecurity. Founded from a single home in the late 1970s, the organization has grown into a community-based housing provider that preserves and renovates multiple homes to create stable housing options. In recent years Well House has continued to expand its housing stock and community services while responding to changing needs: it scaled emergency food and tenant support during the COVID-19 pandemic, completed property renovations, and advanced its multi-phase Building Community: Scaling to Sustainability development to add accessible, energy-efficient units for households at or below very low incomes. Financially, Well House reported increased revenue and assets in its most recent public filings (fiscal-year 2024), supporting ongoing operations and development. Well House operates with a small professional staff and volunteer base, emphasizes tenant stability and community integration, and partners with local government and regional housing funders to secure capital and operating support for new units and renovations.

Notable achievements

Expanded housing portfolio

By late 2019 the organization restored its 16th house and, since then, has continued renovating and placing units into service to provide permanent, low-cost shared housing for people exiting homelessness.

Secured multi-source development funding (2024–2026)

Well House advanced its Building Community initiative by securing state and local housing funds (including a 2024 state allocation under PA 121) and regional Affordable Housing Program grant support to build and renovate new accessible units for very low-income households.

Operational financial growth (FY2024)

Most recent public financial filings show growth in revenue and net assets in FY2024, enabling continued operations, property maintenance, and development activity.
