About NATIONAL NATIVE AMERICAN BOARDING SCHOOL HEALING COALITION

The National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition (NABS) is a Native-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Minneapolis that advocates for truth, justice, and healing for survivors, descendants, and communities affected by U.S. Indian boarding school policies. NABS combines survivor-centered oral history collection, historical research and digital archiving, education and curriculum development, and policy advocacy — including support for a Truth and Healing Commission and partnership work with federal initiatives to identify and document boarding school records.

Notable achievements

National Indian Boarding School Digital Archive (NIBSDA)

Built and expanded a national digital archive aggregating survivor narratives, primary documents, and records to preserve boarding school histories and support research and community access.

Largest known school list compiled (2025)

Published a major research update (February 2025) documenting 526 U.S. Indian boarding schools, the most comprehensive list compiled to date.

Survivor-centered oral history project

Conducted a multi-state oral history project (2024–2025) that interviewed 100+ survivors and descendants, integrating trauma-informed supports and expanding the organization’s archival holdings.
