About BIDDY MASON CHARITABLE FOUNDATION
The Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation (BMCF) is a Los Angeles–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit named for Bridget “Biddy” Mason and focused on serving current and former foster youth across Los Angeles County. Founded as an outreach ministry of First African Methodist Episcopal (FAME) Church in 2013 and organized as an independent nonprofit by 2016, the foundation operates programs that combine direct support (scholarships, stipends, transitional housing) with public education about Black history and the legacy of Biddy Mason.
BMCF runs recurring signature programs including an annual Thanksgiving celebration, a large foster-youth resource fair that connects youth with colleges and service providers, and a scholarship program for postsecondary and vocational training. In addition to service delivery, the foundation maintains a community-facing center in Los Angeles’ West Adams neighborhood that hosts tours and historical programming about Biddy Mason and related local history.
Notable achievements
Largest scholarship year (2024)
In 2024 the foundation reached a milestone year, awarding nearly $100,000 in scholarships—the organization’s largest single-year scholarship distribution to date—serving dozens of current and former foster youth across Los Angeles County.
Broad scholarship and stipend reach
During recent filings and program reports the foundation reported distributing approximately 50 youth scholarships and multiple book stipends in a single year, expanding access to both academic and vocational pathways for system-impacted youth.
Major resource fairs and community events
BMCF established and scaled an annual foster-youth Resource Fair (host sites have included prominent local cultural institutions) that brings colleges, workforce programs, county agencies, and youth-service organizations together to connect youth with education, housing, employment, and support services.
