About INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF MINNESOTA

The International Institute of Minnesota (IIMN) is a Saint Paul–based nonprofit founded in 1919 that provides refugee resettlement, immigration and citizenship services, English-language instruction, workforce and leadership development, and other supports for New Americans. IIMN operates as a donor-facing, service-delivery organization and partners with government agencies, foundations, and community organizations to deliver programs across the Twin Cities. In recent years the Institute has expanded capacity and reported multi-year growth in clients served, with targeted outcomes in rapid economic stabilization, successful naturalization, and career advancement. The organization combines direct services (case management, legal support, classes, job training) with advocacy and community partnership work to help immigrants, refugees, asylees, survivors of trafficking, and unaccompanied youth rebuild lives and achieve long-term self-sufficiency.

Notable achievements

Large-scale service reach (FY2025)

In its most recent annual reporting year, the Institute reported serving over 6,000 New Americans across education, employment, immigration, and resettlement programs, reflecting significant program growth and expanded capacity.

Refugee resettlement with rapid stabilization

IIMN resettled hundreds of refugees in recent years and reported that a substantial portion of newly arrived households attained basic economic stability within 90 days of arrival (e.g., 303 refugees resettled with rapid progress reported in a recent fiscal year).

High naturalization success and cost savings

The Institute reports a naturalization assistance success rate above typical peer averages and has helped applicants secure fee waivers and other supports that collectively saved applicants substantial fees, reducing barriers to U.S. citizenship.
