About GREATER MINNEAPOLIS COUNCIL OF CHURCHES

Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches (GMCC, branded as GMCC and home to Minnesota FoodShare) is an interfaith, multicultural nonprofit founded in 1905 that partners with communities across Minnesota to address food insecurity, youth development, and wellbeing. The organization operates statewide programs (notably the Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign), neighborhood drop-in services, youth STEAM and after-school programming, and culturally-specific recovery supports.

In recent years GMCC has continued to scale Minnesota FoodShare (the state’s largest grassroots food and fund drive), expanded its culturally-specific Recovery Care services including the UMM Project (launched October 2024), and grown LakeStreet Youth Labs (I-SAC accredited STEAM and after-school programming). GMCC uses a co-design approach with communities most impacted by inequities and explicitly centers racial, economic, and geographic equity in its work.

Notable achievements

2025 Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign

GMCC’s 2025 March Campaign engaged roughly 270 participating food shelves and helped raise $10,144,712 and collect 5,647,451 pounds of food, supporting food shelves statewide during the annual statewide campaign.

Cumulative FoodFund impact

Through the Minnesota FoodShare FoodFund (the campaign’s pooled distribution mechanism), GMCC has, to date, distributed more than $18.6 million to participating food shelves and partners to strengthen food security and the capacity of local food programs.

Launch and expansion of culturally-specific recovery services

GMCC launched and expanded Recovery Care programs (including the UMM Project for Somali/East African mothers) and grew a team of Certified Peer Recovery Specialists; this work was advanced with targeted opioid-settlement funding to expand culturally-specific recovery access and supports.
