About AMERICAN LEGION FAMILY HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION

The American Legion Family Hospital Association (ALFHA) is a Minnesota-based 501(c)(3) charitable organization formally affiliated with The American Legion, Department of Minnesota. It was organized in 1922 to assist veterans and later extended membership and assistance to the Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion. ALFHA provides direct, case-by-case financial assistance for hospital and doctor bills to eligible Legion Family members, with assistance levels historically capped (case cap cited by program materials and department publications at up to $4,000 per approved case). The association is governed by a board that includes representatives from the Legion, Auxiliary, and SAL and is administered through the Department of Minnesota's program structure. ALFHA files annual Form 990 returns and has shown steady financial reserves in recent years, reporting total assets in the high hundreds of thousands and operating largely on member dues, posts/units donations, and investment income while making periodic grants to members in need.
