About PHYLLIS WHEATLEY COMMUNITY CENTER INC

Phyllis Wheatley Community Center is a long-established community organization based in North Minneapolis that provides early childhood education, youth development, family-support services, and community-building programs. Founded in 1924 as a settlement house serving Black residents excluded from other services, the center remains focused on uplifting children, families, and residents of North Minneapolis. In recent years the Center has marked its centennial, advanced a multi-year restoration of Camp Katharine Parsons to restore outdoor programming for city youth, and expanded workforce- and technology-focused youth offerings (DigitalTechWorks Academy) alongside family economic-empowerment and restorative-support services. The organization operates an on-site child development center (Mary T. Wellcome Child Development Center), youth leadership and sports programs, parenting and financial-wealth-building initiatives, and partnerships with local schools and funders to serve North Minneapolis residents.

Notable achievements

Centennial milestone (1924–2024)

Celebrated 100 years of continuous community service in 2024, marking a century of programming and advocacy for North Minneapolis and launching a renewed strategic focus for the next era.

Protection of Camp Katharine Parsons

Placed a long-term conservation easement on Camp Katharine Parsons and has advanced a multi-year campaign to restore the historic camp so it can once again host outdoor education and summer experiences for city youth.

Sustained early childhood services

Operates the Mary T. Wellcome Child Development Center serving infants through pre-K and providing culturally responsive early learning supports that form a core part of the center’s intergenerational approach.
