About American Swedish Institute

The American Swedish Institute (ASI) is a museum and cultural center in Minneapolis set on the historic Turnblad Mansion campus. Founded in 1929 by Swedish immigrant Swan J. Turnblad, ASI preserves Swedish and Swedish‑American history while presenting contemporary exhibitions, cultural programs, language classes, and hands‑on workshops. In recent years ASI has expanded its community-facing offerings with youth and family programs, school partnerships, multilingual public programming, and international contemporary exhibitions that foreground migration, identity, and cross-cultural exchange. The organization is an active, donor-facing nonprofit with published annual filings and an ongoing exhibition and events calendar that serves local and regional audiences.

Notable achievements

75th annual Tomte Tales Holiday Experience

Maintained and presented its long-running Tomte Tales holiday exhibition for its 75th annual season, sustaining a major seasonal audience and family engagement tradition.

Hosted Salad Hilowle: Inscriptions (2025)

Presented Salad Hilowle’s first major solo exhibition outside Sweden (Inscriptions), a high-profile multimedia show that included collaboration with the Somali Museum of Minnesota and multilingual tours, expanding ASI’s reach and cross-cultural programming.

Community-built Nature’s Story Family Gallery (2024)

Opened an interactive Nature’s Story family gallery created in collaboration with local students from Hope Academy, establishing a permanent family-facing gallery with play-based learning and early-childhood engagement.
