About SAINT PAUL CHAMBER ORCHESTRA SOCIETY

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra Society is the nonprofit organization that operates The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO), a Grammy-winning, professionally salaried chamber orchestra based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Renowned for artistic excellence, versatility of repertoire and an often-unconducted ensemble model, the SPCO presents an annual season of subscription and community concerts across the Twin Cities and tours nationally and internationally.

The Society places strong emphasis on access and education: it offers affordable ticketing (including free tickets for children and students through its New Generation Initiative), a free Concert Library of on-demand performances, and school partnerships and in-classroom programs that reach K–12 students. The SPCO also maintains a sustained commitment to new music through its Sandbox composer residencies and regular commissioning activity.

In the last few years the organization has stabilized its finances while expanding audience access through an affordable Concert Membership model and digital distribution (including making the Concert Library available on streaming platforms). The Society continues to appoint new Artistic Partners, add musician positions, and produce recordings and tours as part of its ongoing artistic and community work.

Notable achievements

Grammy Award (2018)

The SPCO received a Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance for its recording of Franz Schubert’s Death and the Maiden, reflecting a national critical recognition of the ensemble's recorded work.

Sustained commissioning and adventurous programming

Across its history the Society has commissioned nearly 200 new works and has been repeatedly recognized for adventurous programming, supporting living composers through long-term Sandbox residencies and frequent premieres.

Expanded access and membership growth (2023–2026)

In recent seasons the Society grew its Concert Membership and audience attendance post-pandemic while maintaining an accessible pricing model (including free child/student tickets through the New Generation Initiative) and expanded its free Concert Library to streaming platforms to broaden digital access.
