About Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (MASWCD)

The Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (MASWCD) is a statewide 501(c)(3) nonprofit that represents Minnesota’s 88 Soil & Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs). It coordinates training, policy advocacy, public education and statewide events so local districts can deliver conservation services to private landowners and communities across the state.

MASWCD operates year-round programs for professional development, youth education (including the Minnesota Envirothon), and legislative engagement, and it regularly partners with state and federal agencies and conservation organizations to advance implementation of local conservation practices. The organization has an active web presence, an events calendar (including its annual convention), and recent program activity documented on its website and partner releases.

Notable achievements

Longstanding statewide representative organization

Founded in 1952, MASWCD serves as the coordinated voice for Minnesota’s 88 SWCDs, providing leadership on state and federal policy, training for district staff and supervisors, and resources to strengthen local conservation capacity.

Minnesota Envirothon (youth education)

MASWCD administers the Minnesota Envirothon, an annual, hands-on natural resources competition and educational program for high-school teams (and junior Envirothon for younger students). The program remains active in recent years (state competitions held in 2024 and 2025) with area-level events feeding a state final and winners advancing to the national Envirothon.

Annual convention and professional development

MASWCD organizes an annual convention and trade show that brings together SWCD board members, staff, agency partners and vendors for training, recognition of outstanding local conservation work, and state-level networking; recent conventions continued into 2024–2025 and included awards presented in partnership with state agencies.
