About SABATHANI COMMUNITY CENTER

Sabathani Community Center is a multi-service, community-driven nonprofit founded in 1966 and based in South Minneapolis. The center offers food and clothing distribution, youth and senior programs, workforce and housing services, health and wellness programs, and a major Community Energy / resilience project. Sabathani centers its work on Black-centered, community-led approaches while serving people of all ages and backgrounds in South Minneapolis. In recent years the organization has scaled food and housing assistance, expanded workforce training and youth programming, and invested in a building-scale energy resiliency project that doubles as a workforce pipeline and community resilience hub.

Notable achievements

Six decades of service (founded 1966)

Founded in 1966, Sabathani is one of Minnesota’s longest-standing African American-led community organizations and marked its 60th anniversary in 2026, sustaining continuous, broad-based community programming for South Minneapolis.

High-volume food & clothing distribution

Sabathani’s food distribution and clothing closet have long been core programs; by mid-2026 the food program recorded 8,035 visits (3,993 households) and distributed 354,694 pounds of food, while the clothing closet recorded 1,489 visits (829 households) and distributed more than 14,000 pounds of clothing through June.

Community Energy Project — resilience hub & workforce training

Sabathani is converting its historic building into a community resilience hub with geothermal wells, rooftop solar, battery storage and energy-efficiency upgrades; construction was more than halfway complete by mid-2026 and the project has been used as a platform for paid internships and trade training.
