The Minnesota Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (MRID) is a member-driven nonprofit (founded 1971) that supports professional sign language interpreters, consumers, and other stakeholders across Minnesota. MRID advances interpreter education, ethical practice, licensure awareness, and community resources while acting as the state affiliate chapter of the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. The organization runs continuing-education programs, an interpreter census and surveys, scholarship programs, conferences and community events to strengthen interpreting services and access for Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing Minnesotans.

Notable achievements

Longstanding state chapter (since 1971)

MRID was incorporated in 1971 and has maintained sustained statewide programming, governance and membership services for more than five decades, serving as Minnesota’s principal professional association for sign language interpreters.

State-level data and outreach (Interpreter Census & surveys)

MRID has produced interpreter surveys and census efforts to map the interpreter workforce and service needs in Minnesota and has continued to update and expand that work (including a 2021 census report and planning of a 2026 census) to inform planning, training, and advocacy.

Ongoing professional development & events

MRID regularly organizes CEU opportunities, conferences, community-of-practice gatherings, scholarship awards and public events (including Camp ASL, annual conferences and regional CEU workshops) to improve interpreting quality and accessibility across the state.
