About MINNESOTA COUNCIL ON FOUNDATIONS

The Minnesota Council on Foundations (MCF) is a statewide membership association of grantmakers that connects, strengthens, and mobilizes philanthropy to advance prosperity and equity across Minnesota. MCF provides member services, peer networks, training, public policy education, research, and acts as a grantmaking intermediary for pooled funds.

In recent years MCF has convened rapid-response networks and hosted multiple pooled funds (including Press Forward Minnesota and the Minnesota Civic Resilience Fund) to move philanthropic capital quickly to community organizations during crises and civic initiatives. The organization also produces grantmaking data, capacity-building programs, and sector guidance aimed at promoting equitable, effective philanthropy in both the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota.

Notable achievements

Pooled funds intermediary & rapid response

MCF has served as an intermediary for numerous pooled funds and established a Rapid Response coordination network that helped foundations move philanthropic dollars quickly to meet basic needs, legal aid, small business support, and recovery efforts during crises.

Launched Press Forward Minnesota

MCF launched and houses Press Forward Minnesota, a statewide philanthropic initiative to strengthen local journalism and reinvest in local news ecosystems through coordinated grantmaking and collaborative strategies.

Civic resilience grantmaking

MCF organized and administered civic-focused pooled funds — including the Minnesota Civic Resilience Fund and related democracy-focused efforts — awarding grants to nonprofit organizations to support nonpartisan voter engagement, civic capacity, and community-based civic health work.
