About LOFT INC (The Loft Literary Center)

Loft, Inc., operating as The Loft Literary Center, is a Minneapolis-based nonprofit literary center that provides classes, mentorship, fellowships, readings, and public programs to support writers and readers at every stage. The organization focuses on advancing craft, fostering community, and removing barriers for BIPOC, marginalized, and immigrant writers. In its most recent fiscal year (September 1, 2023–August 31, 2024) the Loft reported robust programmatic activity: it paid substantial artist compensation, distributed significant artist support through awards, provided program discounts to reduce financial barriers, and served more than 3,000 students from across the United States and other countries. The Loft is a donor-facing, operating charity with an active web presence, published annual report and Form 990s, and ongoing classes and public events.

Notable achievements

50th Anniversary Milestone

In FY 2023–2024 the Loft marked its 50th anniversary with a year of celebratory programming (including a public event featuring Roxane Gay), a commemorative chapbook, the inauguration of a new Minneapolis Poet Laureate, and the launch of a new fundraising campaign to support future programming.

Significant Artist Investment

During the 2023–2024 fiscal year the Loft paid $444,669 in artist compensation and provided $149,000 in direct artist support through awards and fellowships, demonstrating measurable investment in writers and teaching artists.

Education & Geographic Reach

The Loft served more than 3,000 students from 48 states and four countries in FY 2023–2024 across classes, workshops, year-long projects, mentorships, and public events, and continues to administer fellowship and award programs (including partnerships with McKnight and other foundations).
