About MINNESOTA HUMANITIES CENTER

The Minnesota Humanities Center (MHC) is a statewide nonprofit humanities organization and an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. MHC produces public programs, traveling exhibits, publications, educator resources, and grantmaking that use history, literature, civics, and culture to foster conversation, learning, and civic engagement across Minnesota. MHC operates an event center in a historic St. Paul building and partners with tribal, community, cultural, and educational organizations to expand access to humanities programming statewide. In recent years the organization has administered Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage (Legacy) grants, advanced projects such as the Bdote Memory Map and the Why Treaties Matter traveling exhibit, and launched large-scale civic programs tied to the nation’s semiquincentennial (The Next 250).

Statewide Grantmaking

MHC administers competitive and non-competitive grants (including Arts & Cultural Heritage/Legacy funding) that support nonprofits, schools, museums, and community groups statewide, distributing multi‑million dollar grant awards in recent fiscal years.

Why Treaties Matter & Bdote Memory Map

In partnership with tribal partners and national institutions, MHC co-led the Why Treaties Matter traveling exhibit and supported the Bdote Memory Map project, elevating Dakota and tribal perspectives on place and history for wide public audiences.

Large-scale Civic Programming (The Next 250)

MHC has developed statewide programming and media projects tied to the U.S. Semiquincentennial (The Next 250), creating opportunities for Minnesotans to reflect on history, civic life, and future goals.
