Sojourner Project, Inc. (known as Sojourner) is a Hopkins, Minnesota–based 501(c)(3) that has provided emergency shelter, legal advocacy, community education, and prevention programming for people affected by domestic violence since its founding in 1977. The agency opened one of Minnesota’s earliest battered women’s shelters in 1979 and today operates a confidential emergency shelter, a 24/7 crisis line, community legal advocacy, outreach and youth education (SafeU), and related support services. Sojourner serves survivors across west Hennepin County and maintains partnerships with multiple local police departments, health providers, schools, and community organizations. In recent years the organization has continued to operate at scale: its most recent filings and reports show active shelter operations, hundreds of therapy and direct-advocacy hours annually, and large-scale community education outreach.

Early shelter pioneer

Founded in 1977 and operating a shelter since 1979, Sojourner was among the first battered women’s shelters in Minnesota and has maintained continuous, direct shelter and crisis services for decades.

2024 program impact

In its most recent fiscal reporting year Sojourner answered over 2,400 crisis-line calls, provided emergency shelter to dozens of women and children (84 women and 112 children reported in 2024 filings), delivered more than 6,000 hours of direct advocacy, provided over 630 therapeutic sessions, and reached over 12,000 people through outreach and youth presentations.

Sustained audited operations

Sojourner completed audited financial statements and filed Form 990 for 2024, reporting annual revenues and operations consistent with a mid-sized local domestic violence service provider, demonstrating financial oversight and organizational continuity.
