About VocalEssence

VocalEssence is a Minneapolis-based nonprofit choral organization (EIN 41-1363849) that produces innovative concerts, commissions new works, and operates an array of learning and engagement programs serving singers and audiences across the Twin Cities and beyond. The organization fields multiple ensembles (professional ensemble singers, a volunteer chorus, youth choir SOTA, and Vintage Voices for older adults), presents 6+ concerts annually, commissions new music, and maintains an active education outreach program that partners with schools and community groups. In recent years VocalEssence has continued in-person and digital programming, touring youth ensembles, community partnerships with local arts organizations, and sustained public broadcasts and recordings while maintaining a stable operating budget and endowed support.

Extensive commissioning legacy

Commissioned more than 300 new works over its history, with more than half by composers of color and Indigenous composers, expanding contemporary choral repertoire.

Large educational reach

Has inspired and engaged roughly 200,000 people through Learning & Engagement programs and, over 50+ years, shared performances with more than half a million total attendees and listeners.

Financial stability and endowment

Maintained a balanced operating budget and established a multi-million dollar endowment (reported at approximately $7.4M) to support artistic sustainability and programming.
