About MIGIZI COMMUNICATIONS INC

MIGIZI Communications, founded in 1977 in Minneapolis, is an Indigenous-led nonprofit that advances the success, well‑being and leadership of American Indian youth through media, education, cultural programming and career pathways. The organization runs in-school and afterschool programs, media and digital storytelling training (First Person Productions), a Green Tech makerspace, tutoring and youth leadership initiatives. After its building was destroyed in the civil unrest of 2020, MIGIZI purchased and renovated a new facility on East Lake Street and reopened to the community in October 2023, expanding capacity for programming and workforce training.

Notable achievements

Rebuilt and reopened new youth center (2023)

After a 2020 fire destroyed its previous site, MIGIZI purchased and renovated a new building on East Lake Street and held a community grand opening in October 2023, restoring in-person services and expanding space for youth programs.

Capital campaign and facility funding

The organization mobilized broad donor support following the 2020 loss, raising initial multi‑million dollar gifts to secure and develop a new, purpose‑built urban youth center that includes classrooms, studios and a makerspace.

Built career-training media and green‑tech capacity

MIGIZI established a professional First Person Productions recording studio, a Best Buy Teen Tech Center partnership, and a Green Tech makerspace—creating hands‑on pathways into media, technology and clean‑energy careers for Indigenous youth.
