About MINNESOTA CENTER FOR BOOK ARTS

Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA) is a nonprofit arts center in Minneapolis that promotes the book as a vital form of contemporary art and a vehicle for learning and engagement. Founded by book arts practitioners and opened to the public in 1985, MCBA is a long-established institution and a founding partner of the Open Book literary center. MCBA operates studios, two galleries, a retail Shop, and an extensive education program. In recent years the organization has reported annually running 200+ workshops, presenting around 10 gallery exhibitions, hosting some 26 fellowships/residencies/mentorships, and serving over 40,000 visitors each year from the local region and beyond.

Notable achievements

Largest dedicated book arts center

MCBA occupies a 12,000+ square-foot facility within Open Book and offers public access to specialized equipment (including foreign-language type), extensive studio access, and multi-disciplinary programming that supports practicing artists and learners at scale.

MCBA Prize (international artist’s-book award)

Since 2009 MCBA has administered the MCBA Prize, an international juried award and exhibition that draws submissions from many countries (the 2024 run received roughly 150 submissions from more than a dozen countries) and includes cash awards and a public exhibition of finalists and the winner.

New Editions & Shop (biennial sales platform)

MCBA’s New Editions pop-up sale and its year-round Shop provide a major marketplace and visibility platform for over 200 local, national, and international book artists, generating earned revenue and directly supporting artists and MCBA’s public programs.
