About SPECIES360

SPECIES360 is an international nonprofit that brings together zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, and related conservation organizations to collect, share, and apply data on plants and animals in human care. Its core product, the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS), is a global data platform used by member institutions to manage animal records, veterinary care, and conservation planning. In recent years SPECIES360 has expanded from record-keeping into active conservation science through the Species360 Conservation Science Alliance and the Species Conservation Toolkit Initiative, providing researchers and practitioners access to aggregated, anonymized datasets and modeling tools that support population management, welfare assessment, and conservation decision-making. The organization operates as a donor-facing 501(c)(3) with an active web presence and regular research outputs, events, and member services.

Notable achievements

Global ZIMS adoption and scope

Developed and maintained ZIMS, the leading zoological information system used by over 1,300 member institutions in more than 100 countries, containing records on tens of thousands of species and enabling coordinated husbandry, medical, and studbook management worldwide.

Established Conservation Science Alliance and peer-reviewed outputs

Built the Species360 Conservation Science Alliance to translate ZIMS data into applied conservation research; alliance-supported studies in the past 2–3 years have documented measurable improvements in population welfare for multiple taxa and have produced peer-reviewed publications and reports used by conservation practitioners.

Launched Species Conservation Toolkit Initiative (SCTI)

Introduced the SCTI (community-funded, launched in 2023) to provide practical population modeling and management tools (including interfaces to commonly used population models and outbreak/spatial tools) that support conservation breeding and planning for threatened species.
