About Environmental Initiative

Environmental Initiative is a Minneapolis-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that convenes business, government, nonprofit, and community partners to develop collaborative solutions to environmental problems across Minnesota. The organization focuses on practical projects and cross-sector convenings that address air quality, regenerative agriculture, water protection, clean equipment transitions, and environmental justice.

Environmental Initiative operates a portfolio of projects and initiatives—such as Project Clean Air Repair, Clean Air Assistance, Reach Farmers Faster, Project Green Fleet, Project Stove Swap, Roots for the Future, and the Source Water Protection Collaborative—that combine on-the-ground action with stakeholder engagement, policy advocacy, and capacity-building to advance equitable environmental outcomes. The organization emphasizes centering BIPOC and community-led leadership in program design and funding processes.

Farmer engagement and acreage influenced

Through the Reach Farmers Faster project, Environmental Initiative trained over 175 conservation professionals using producer-centered outreach and influenced conservation practices across more than 450,000 acres of agricultural land.

Advocacy for community-directed grant funding

Environmental Initiative collaborated with BIPOC leaders, state legislators, and mainstream environmental groups in 2024 to shape Minnesota’s lottery-funded environmental grant renewal, helping secure over $28 million designated for a new community grants program that prioritizes inclusive, community-driven funding.
