About NAUTILUS MUSIC THEATER
Nautilus Music-Theater (founded as a program of Minnesota Opera in 1986 and incorporated independently in 1992) is a Saint Paul–based nonprofit that supports the creation, development, and production of new operas and other forms of music-theater. It operates artist-development programs, work-in-progress presentations, community commissions, and fully-staged productions across the Twin Cities and beyond. Its regular programs include the Wesley Balk Opera/Music-Theater Institute for performers, a long-running Composer-Librettist Studio, the Rough Cuts works-in-progress series, and community commission projects that pair Nautilus artists with local partners for creative and educational activities. Nautilus maintains an archival presence and has recently pursued digitization of historic performance video assets to preserve and increase access to its materials. In the past several years Nautilus has remained active with grant-supported programming and artist development: it has received foundation and public funding for general operating support and specific projects, and was awarded City of Saint Paul Cultural STAR funding for its ROUGH CUTS series in the 2025 funding round. The organization continues to present workshops, readings, and productions while partnering with regional institutions to develop new music-theater works.
